After a brief dry spell, heavy rain returned to lash the Capital on Tuesday leading to water-logging and massive traffic jams in various parts of the Capital, inconveniencing both commuters and pedestrians alike.
The Meteorological Department's rain gauge recorded 58.2 mm of rainfall during the day till 5-30 p.m.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi's control room received 18 complaints of water-logging till 3 p.m.
The incessant rain also led to uprooting of six trees in the MCD area.
One injured
One person was also reportedly injured when a building part collapsed in Harit Vihar area of Jehangirpuri, according to Delhi Fire Service.
Major water-logging was reported near ISBT Kashmere Gate, Ashram flyover, Minto Road, AIIMS flyover, CGO Complex, Defence Colony, Lajpat Nagar, Jangpura, Bhogal and Gautam Nagar. Water-logging was also reported from areas such as Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, Ambedkar Stadium, Tilak Bridge, Mathura Road to Bhagwan Das Road, Pyare Lal Bhawan ITO, IP flyover, Minto Road to Minto Bridge, MCD Community Center Kashmere Gate, Azad Market, Kashmere Gate Metro Station to I.P. College, ISBT to Ritz Cinema, Karol Bagh and East Park Road.
According to the Delhi Traffic Police, heavy traffic was reported in Bhogal, Ashram, ISBT Kashmere Gate, Dhaula Kuan, Motibagh towards Hyaat Hotel, Kalindi Kunj, Millennium Park to Akshardham and All India Institute of Medical Sciences. Harassed commuters also complained of traffic jams in Connaught Place, Minto Road, ITO, Aurobindo Marg, Rajghat and Pragati Maidan among others.
Non-functional traffic lights and vehicles breaking down owing to water inundation on the roads also worsened commuter woes.
Businessman Inderpreet Singh who was stuck in traffic jam in Greater Kailash for over an hour said: “Although traffic cops were present, the situation was beyond their control as most signals were not functioning. Arterial roads in Kalkaji and Greater Kailash also suffered from slow traffic movement as vehicles moved into residential lanes here to avoid the roadblock.”
Motorists at Ashoka Road near BJP headquarters were also inconvenienced owing to a fallen tree branch .
Added another commuter Richa Dewan: “I was stuck for over 45 minutes at Aurobindo Marg which was choked owing to heavy water-logging on the road. One of the three red lights on the stretch was non-functional but chaos reigned as people were not following the traffic signals owing to slow traffic movement.”
The weatherman has forecast a generally cloudy sky with one or two spells of thundershowers which maybe heavy in some areas.
The maximum and minimum temperature is expected to be around 33 degrees Celsius and 26 degree Celsius respectively.
