The Delhi High Court on Tuesday sought the response of the Centre on a plea filed by Students'Federation of India (SFI) against the UGC notification which they say has resulted in massive seat cuts.

A Bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal sought the response of the Centre by way of an affidavit to be filed by April 28. SFI has challenged UGC's admission norms for M.Phil and Ph.D courses in the country saying it is irrational.

The body has also challenged the constitutional validity of the said notification.

Single judge’s order

On Monday, the court had sought the Centre's response to an appeal by three students against a single judge's order that dismissed the students’ plea against the university's new admission policy for the academic year 2017-18 based on a 2016 UGC regulation.

The students have contended that, in JNU, the regulations have resulted in massive seat cuts for the M.Phil and Ph.D courses for the 2017-18 academic year. They have been arguing that JNU can tweak the UGC norms to suit its own education standards. The single judge held otherwise.
