In order to ensure seamless movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic near metro stations, Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung on Thursday approved plans of inter-modal transport in and around 11 metro stations – one existing and 10 upcoming stations under phase-III.

The plans prepared by the transport and traffic planning body, UTTIPEC, envisage integration of inter-modal transport around existing and upcoming metro stations to develop efficient, convenient, and safe inter-modal connectivity for all metro users, officials said.

Different approach

All the 11 metro stations have different approach towards achieving a hassle-free movement depending on their location and the activities in the vicinity.

It includes integration of metro station with the nearest bus terminal, skywalks and travellators to connect the metro with adjoining commercial hubs and dedicated space for intermediary means of transport like autos, rickshaws and other vehicles.

“The plans aim at ensuring seamless transitions or interchanges between different modes to complete travel trip, besides availability of options to select different modes to make travel trip cheaper, faster and more comfortable. It envisages effective organisation and spatial allocation of various para-transit modes, so that convenience to public transport users is maximised and efficiency of all modes is improved,” an official said.

Once in place, officials said, the initiatives would improve ‘walkability’, making the passages comfortable and safe for all to use.

The Delhi Metro assured the L-G at the review meeting that construction work under phase-III was on course and it would be completed by June, 2016.
