Spurred by the past track record of prices of essential vegetables registering a steep hike during the summer months, the Delhi Government has launched measures to keep the rates, including onions and potatoes, under check.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia took stock of the measures at a review meeting of the Food and Supply Department here on Monday, while affirming that the preparation was essential “at the right earnest” to have a meaningful market intervention.

Mr. Sisodia said the Delhi Government’s objectives were giving the farmers due prices for their produce and ensuring adequate supply to the consumers of the Capital, especially those belonging to the economically weaker sections, at reasonable prices. The process of augmentation for creating buffer stock in producing areas need to be strengthened, he added.

Mr. Sisodia also directed the departments concerned to provide legality to the push cart-based vegetable sellers to enable them to earn their livelihood with dignity and provide effective delivery mechanism to the people.
