Govt. gets moving on sanitation by-laws

December 03, 2014 09:42 am | Updated April 07, 2016 02:31 am IST - NEW DELHI:

A long-overdue plan to implement strict sanitation by-laws is finally seeing some movement with the Delhi Government getting ready to send it to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs later this week.

Urban Development Secretary and Director of Local Bodies Rajendra Kumar said on Tuesday that the implementation of the sanitation bye-laws proposed by the municipal corporations will require an amendment by Parliament.

“We will be sending our proposal to amend the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act to the Home Ministry by the end of this week,” said Mr. Kumar, adding that the bye-laws will deter people from littering.

The draft bye-laws were sent to the State government by the civic bodies in September 2013. The bye-laws put hefty fines on all forms of insanitation, including littering, spitting, failure to segregate and store waste properly.

Municipal officials said the implementation of the by-laws is integral to cleaning up Delhi, especially with a nationwide sanitation drive underway.
