The Delhi Government’s food security scheme, which is set to launch next month, will benefit 5.10 lakh families and will take effect from September 1, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said on Sunday.

She said her government is gearing up to launch the ambitious scheme from August 20. Ms. Dikshit also said the benefits will be given to the senior-most female member of the family in order to empower women in the Capital.

Below Poverty Line families and Jhuggi Ration Card/Antodaya Anna Yojana card-holder families will be provided grains at subsidised rates – wheat at Rs.2 per kg, rice at Rs.3 per kg and coarse grain at Rs.1 per kg.

Ms. Dikshit said the Delhi Government will continue to include more families under the ambit of the scheme and food security cards will be distributed at a formal launch function. The government has been working to make Delhi hunger-free through its Jan Aahar and Aap Ki Rasoi centres, she noted.

Ms. Dikshit spoke about the food security scheme at the 3rd RWA Workshop on Time-Bound Delivery of Services organised here. The event saw participation from representatives of East, North-East and Shahdara districts. She said her government has been working to facilitate people in getting services from various government departments and agencies without any hassles.

Delhi Urban Development Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said the workshop was a unique platform which provides an opportunity to people to express their views directly before the Chief Minister.
