Following action against illegal meat shops, the Ghaziabad administration has started working on a policy to regularise meat shops.

Ghaziabad District Magistrate Nidhi Kesarwani told The Hindu that she had chaired a meeting on regularising of meat shops in Ghaziabad. Officials from the Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam, Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board and other agencies were present.

Drive across State

“We understand the issues of owners whose shops have been sealed. We’ll form a policy to regularise these shops. A committee will be formed to examine shops and issue licenses to those adhering to norms,” she further added.

A drive against illegal meat shops and slaughter houses is on across U.P. On Thursday, 16 shops were sealed in Dadri in Greater Noida and in various parts in Bulandshahr, including in Kakore and Shikarpur.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) had in its order in 2014 directed State government officials to take action against meat shops and slaughter houses running without permission and not adhering to rules.

On action taken in connection with the NGT order, Ms. Kesarwani said the tribunal had directed formation of a committee and steps to ensure proper regulation of slaughter houses and meat shops. The NGT had ordered the officials to ensure that no pollution was caused due to slaughtering and that no illegal slaughtering is permitted in any of these districts.

“As per NGT orders, a committee was formed and administration is working to implement the order,” she added.

According to Municipal Solid Wastes (Management and Handling) Rules, 2000, animal waste shall not be thrown in municipal drains or any part of the streets or roads. It should be collected, transported and disposed of.
