Garbage trucks operating in Delhi without fitness certificates

September 18, 2014 10:09 am | Updated May 23, 2016 04:03 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

The North Delhi civic body’s garbage trucks have been operating without fitness certification from the Transport Department, officials admitted on Wednesday.

Leader of Opposition Mukesh Goel alleged at a meeting of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation’s Standing Committee on Wednesday that in the seven years of BJP rule in the civic body, garbage trucks and loaders had not been checked for fitness.

Officials confirmed that 20 trucks and eight loaders did not have the required certification from the Delhi Government’s Transport Department. “The vehicles are in running condition, but it is true that they do not have fitness certificates,” said an official.

When asked as to why the certification was not sought, officials had no reply. However, Commissioner Pravin Kumar Gupta said new trucks would be procured soon.

“We have already approved Rs.2.80 crore for new trucks. When we get the new vehicles, we will have the fitness tests of the old ones also done. Vehicles found unfit will be phased out,” Mr. Gupta informed the Standing Committee.
