Residents of South Delhi may soon get some relief from garbage piling up on their streets as the local civic body has decided to step in and do the work of the sanitation concessionaire.

At a meeting of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation’s Standing Committee on Tuesday, officials admitted that the private concessionaire supposed to pick up garbage was not doing its job.

Members of the Standing Committee, including chairperson Satish Upadhyay, said they had seen garbage lying on the roads of their wards. Officials said they had penalised the concessionaire, but that did not make any difference.

“We can’t just rely on the mercy of the concessionaire. Sanitation is our obligatory responsibility so if they are not doing it, we will,” said Mr. Upadhyay.

He ordered officials to form a task force to make sure garbage is lifted from dhalaos (dumps) in all the four zones of the SDMC. “If we need to send our own trucks to pick up the garbage, we will do it. Let’s at least deliver on our responsibility and then we can penalise the concessionaire,” said the chairperson.

Residents and sanitation workers will be able to call a control room that will take their complaints about garbage and the task force will have it lifted.

Apart from that, the Standing Committee chairperson asked all departments to give presentations at the next meeting so their ongoing projects and future initiatives can be monitored.
