The police on Sunday claimed to have busted an alleged gang of robbers who targeted people by offering them a ride along the Delhi-Gurugram border at night and then forcibly snatched their belongings.

Four members of the gang were arrested on April 14, the police said on Sunday. They added that the accused are allegedly involved in three dozen cases. The police said the accused assaulted and even stabbed victims before dumping them at isolated stretches.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West) Milind Mahadeo Dumbere said the accused have been identified as Rahul Kumar, Birender Pratap, Kamlesh Kumar and Tinku, all in their 20s.

Recent incidents

“Incidents of robberies on NH-8 from Gurugram to Delhi’s Dhaula Kuan, Ring Road and Dwarka Express Road were reported recently. The victims were looted by car-borne robbers. The most recent complaints were received on April 2 and April 8,” said Mr. Dumbere

In the first incident, the officer said, a man was offered a lift near Mahipalpur and dumped near Dhaula Kuan after being stabbed and robbed. In the second incident, a hotel employee who also took a lift from NH-8 was looted of his mobile phone, wristwatch and cash after being assaulted. He too was dumped near Dhaula Kuan, the police added.

“All four were arrested near a hospital in Saket after we got a tip-off about their arrival. We have recovered stolen items such as mobile phones, gold rings, wallets, ATM cards and cash from them,” said Mr. Dumbere.

The accused allegedly told the police that they observed a number of people waiting for vehicles at Kapashera, Mahipalpur Chowk and Dhaula Kuan along NH-8, and took lifts in shared cabs due to non availability of public transport at night. “The gang had started looting commuters in the past few months,” said the officer.
