A gang of notorious carjackers, who had also laid their hands on a truck carrying cigarettes worth Rs 6.25 crore, has been busted by a Crime Branch team, police said on Friday.
The nine arrested men are alleged to be involved in more than 70 registered cases of robberies, carjacking, thefts, etc. Seven cars, including SUVs, have been recovered from them.
“The gang used a car with red beacon while committing many of their crimes. They would also use traffic regulating light bars to stop vehicles they planned to rob,” said Ravindra Yadav, Joint CP (Crime).
Two of these suspects have in the past escaped from police custody. One of them, Sunil Sansi, had given the UP Police the slip while being produced in Karkardooma Court in 2008. Within months, he had gone on to rob Rs 37 lakh at gun point from a cash van in Amritsar.
Another suspect, Sunil, too had escaped from Punjab Police’s custody while being produced in Tis Hazari Court a year later.
The Crime Branch had deployed its sources to track this gang. The gang members were arrested one after the other, beginning April 11.
