Four persons, including two policemen, were killed and eight sustained injuries when a truck ploughed into them on a flyover in Mayapuri here on Saturday.
The deceased have been identified as Head Constable Deshraj (50), Constable Pawan (21), Pawan (25) and his maternal uncle Vijay Singh (45).
Pawan, a resident of Manglapuri in Palam, was on his way home in Wagon-R car around 5 a.m. when a mini-truck hit him on Mayapuri flyover. Pawan sought damages from the driver of the mini-truck and an altercation ensued between them. When the two could not reach a compromise, Pawan called up Vijay, a resident of Palam, to come to the spot. Soon, Vijay reached the spot in a hired auto and entered into an altercation with the driver. When the matter could not be resolved, Vijay made a call to the Police Control Room and a police team reached the spot.
While the police team was recording the statements of the complainants, a speeding truck coming from the direction of Rajouri Garden and ploughed into them. While Pawan and Vijay died on the spot, the two policemen succumbed to their injuries during treatment at Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital. Eight persons also sustained injuries in the accident.
Head Constable Deshraj, a native of Himachal Pradesh, stayed in Kingsway Camp. Constable Pawan, who joined the Delhi Police in 2010, belonged to Jaipur.
The truck driver absconded following the accident.
