Five alleged auto-lifters have been arrested from different parts of the Capital and seventeen stolen vehicles recovered from them.
Asgar Ali was arrested by the Crime Branch of Delhi Police near Anand Vihar railway station when he was allegedly travelling in a car stolen from Shakarpur. In all, six stolen cars were recovered at his instance. During interrogation, the accused disclosed that he along with his accomplices, including one Nawab, stole vehicles from different parts of Delhi and adjoining cities. Nawab would change the engine and chassis numbers of the vehicles in his workshop at Meerut and then the gang members would sell them on forged documents obtained from a contact in Ghaziabad, said the police.
Two alleged auto-lifters, Ashu (23) and Javed (19), were arrested when they were trying to dispose of a stolen motorcycle in Mansarovar Park. During interrogation, the accused confessed to their involvement in cases of vehicle thefts, snatching and robbery cases. Ashu was previously arrested in two vehicle theft cases.
The accused had also committed a robbery in Timarpur in May. At their instance, the police have recovered four stolen motorcycles.
Two more persons, Sahil and Shailender, were arrested at Maurya Enclave. After stealing the vehicles, they would park them in residential societies and hospital complexes to evade detection. The police claim to have recovered nine stolen vehicles at their instance.
