An Uttar Pradesh government official, who was accused of allegedly having obtained admission into an engineering college on the basis of a fake mark-sheet, has applied for voluntary retirement after a probe was initiated against him.

“A probe was on to examine the educational documents of Hem Sharma, the additional managing director of UP Rajkiya Nirman Nigam (UPRNN). Mr. Sharma has now applied for VRS,” said UPRNN former managing director R. K. Goel, who was directed by the government to conduct a probe on May 23.

Mr. Goel was removed as UPRNN head by the Yogi Adityanath government on July 1 for alleged corruption.

On the probe against Mr. Sharma, Mr. Goel said there was a complaint against Mr. Sharma for having obtained admission in a south India-based engineering college based on a fake mark-sheet. “Mr. Sharma had secured 53% marks in intermediate. However to ensure admission in the college at that time, at least first division in intermediate was required,” he added.

Bad reputation

“During my tenure as UPRNN MD, we had asked the concerned educational institute to provide details of Mr. Sharma,” Mr. Goel said.

The UPRNN is said to be one of the most controversial department in the State.

Last month, the CBI had booked two UPRNN officials for taking bribe in lieu of awarding contracts to an Andhra Pradesh-based company.

In April, Income-Tax sleuths raided six premises, including a sprawling farmhouse, factory and residences, reportedly belonging to a general manager posted with UPRNN in Dehradun.
