Seven persons including a mechanical engineer were arrested for allegedly indulging in online betting during the India vs Australia cricket match on Thursday.
The accused had downloaded a software called ‘betting assistance’ on their laptops which showed rates, timings and preferences of persons participating in the betting game, the police said on Friday.
The accused identified as Ashprit Singh, alleged kingpin and engineer, Sumit Malhotra alias Chinki, Anubhav Anand, Sumit Singh Sachdeva, Satnam Singh, Sachin Sehgal, Gagandeep were apprehended after the team under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police Hukma Ram raided the rented accommodation in north-west Delhi’s Derawal Nagar.
The police said that the accused were running the racket for nearly a month now. Their movement was under police scanner. Finally a raid was conducted on Thursday at around 8.30 p.m.
Caught red-handed
The seven were caught red-handed betting ₹1.9 lakh at the time of the raid.
“The house belongs to Manoj Kumar Malhotra and Dinesh Kumar Malhotra who live in Lawrence Road area. They had given the property on rent to one Aditya or Nitin. We are verifying the information and investigating their role,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (north-west) Milind Mahadeo Dumbere.
The police claim to have recovered several mobile phones, laptops, LED TV among other items.
