Elephant rescued after years of effort

July 25, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:37 am IST - New Delhi:

Animal activists call him the “unluckiest elephant” they know. It took over 50 policemen, several foresters and a 20-hour operation following years of legal battle to finally rescue Mohan from slavery.

Now free from his influential and politically-backed captors in Pratapgarh district of Uttar Pradesh, after the district court intervened, 55-year-old Mohan is now in Uttar Pradesh Forest Department’s custody. Mohan and Raju, another elephant, who had been rescued by the animal welfare organisation Wildlife SOS two years back from Allahabad, were sold at Sonepur Cattle Fair, Bihar.

Mohan’s medical report says he is very thin and “emaciated” due to severe starvation. — IANS
