EDMC moves green panel

July 07, 2017 01:25 am | Updated 01:26 am IST - New Delhi

The East Delhi Municipal Corporation on Thursday moved the National Green Tribunal (NGT) seeking allotment of land to develop sanitary landfills to handle 2,300 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily.

A Bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar issued notices to all parties in the case and asked the Environment Ministry to clarify its stand before July 24, the next date of hearing.

The NGT had last year asked the EDMC to approach a high-powered expert panel, set up to look into the working of the waste-to-energy plants in Delhi, for allotment of land.

In its plea, the EDMC said there was immediate requirement for alternative land as the Ghazipur site, which handles 13 million tonnes of waste, has outlived its normal lifespan.
