A Delhi court has sentenced two men to 20 years’ imprisonment each for gang-raping a 21-year-old woman in 2013 in north-east Delhi. The court also awarded a compensation of ₹5 lakh to the woman.
The woman and her husband had come to the Capital from Bihar in search of employment. The couple had met convicts Ravi and Digamber while looking for rented accommodation. The duo convinced the couple that they would get a room for them. Ravi and Digamber took them to an accommodation, where they kept them in illegal confinement and sexually assaulted the woman.
‘Threatened, confined’
Additional Sessions Judge Anurag Sain held the two men guilty of raping the woman, threatening her and illegally confining her.
The police lodged a case in the matter when the couple narrated the incident to an autorickshaw driver, who happened to be a member of a political party, while travelling to Anand Vihar railway station in east Delhi.
The autorickshaw driver informed other members of the party about the incident. They took the couple to Gokulpuri police station in north-east Delhi and organised a protest. Thereafter, the police lodged a case. The duo was arrested immediately and were in judicial custody since.
