A man accused of two murders in Wazirabad here allegedly committed suicide at his native village in Kanpur, the police said on Tuesday. Mohit’s body was found hanging from a tubewell in the fields in the morning, the police added.
Mohit was the prime suspect in the murders of his 24-year-old cousin Sonia and 24-year-old wife Premlata, whose bodies were found on their ground-floor residence here on Monday morning.
Bloodstained clothes
His body was found hanging three km away from his house in Kanpur-Dehat, his hands were bloody and his right wrist was slit, said a senior officer privy to the case.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (north) Jatin Narwal, the police found a bag next to the body containing bloodstained clothes and two mobile phones belonging to his wife and him. A few sulphas tablets were also found next to the body but initial reports suggest that he did not consume them.
Phone switched off
According to the police, Mohit left for Kanpur right after the murders early on Monday morning but never reached home. Though his phone was switched off immediately after the murders, he switched it on briefly a few times. This helped the police trace his location. A team of Delhi Police reached Kanpur to detain Mohit. However, his body was found by the local police, after which his family and the Delhi Police were approached.
The police said he allegedly killed the women as he was insecure and suspected his wife of having an affair. The couple got married in April this year.
“His wife was more educated than him. He was an insecure husband and they frequently fought after marriage. He suspected her of having an affair and used to check her phone regularly,” said a senior police officer.
Attacked with a knife
The police suspect that Mohit was under the influence of alcohol when he got into a fight with his wife and attacked her with a knife. Sonia probably tried to stop her cousin from attacking Premlata, with whom she shared a good relationship, and died as a result.
“Post-mortem has been conducted to establish if he was drunk at the time of the murders or not. His bloodstained clothes have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory,” said the officer.
