: This summer, 250 new stainless-steel water tankers of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) will be pressed into service to deal with emergencies.
On Friday, DJB chairperson Kapil Mishra flagged of the new fleet of 250 tankers from the Delhi Secretariat.
Mr. Mishra said the tankers will help supply water in crisis area across the Capital in the coming months, as temperatures rise.
Not dependant on private tankers
These tankers are the DJB’s own and will help the water utility to reduce its dependence on private tankers hired over the past few years.
Of the 250 new tankers, 58 tankers have the capacity to carry 9,000 litres each and 192 can carry 4,000 litres each.
These tankers are GPS-enabled, which means that they can be tracked in real-time.
Currently, the DJB has 407 stainless-steel tankers and 385 mild steel tankers that supply water in areas that lack piped supply or to other parts of the city in case of emergencies.
The DJB was supposed to launch these tankers in April, and had bought the vehicles, but the fabrication and registration took longer than expected. As per the summer action plan, these tankers will be deployed in crisis areas.
