A 26-year-old woman, Komal Malhotra, was shot at in front of her house by two unidentified bikers when she tried to foil their attempt to snatch her neighbour’s chain in Vivek Vihar here on Monday. No arrests have been made so far.

According to 32-year-old Anshu Bhasin, the woman whose chain the duo was allegedly trying to snatch, the incident took place around 8-15 a.m. while she was returning home after dropping her daughter to her school bus.

“As I was on my way home I saw two men on a motorcycle approaching me. As I got a little suspicious, I started walking faster and entered the main gate of A- Block of Jhilmil Colony where both Komal and I live. When I reached near A-202 (Komal’s house) the bikers came next to me and the pillion rider tried to pull my gold chain. I resisted and pulled it in the other direction and he fell from the bike,” said Ms. Bhasin.

Ms. Bhasin got hold of the attacker’s arm and it was then that Komal, on hearing the commotion, came out of her house with a broom in her hand. Komal then started hitting the snatcher with the broom and held his arm to prevent him from escaping.

The accused then fished out a firearm and fired one round at Komal from close range. The bullet first hit her index finger and after piercing it grazed past her chest.

The attacker then got back on the motorcycle and drove away.

Ms. Bhasin and Komal’s family members then sought the help of another neighbour to rush her to the nearby Deepak Memorial Hospital.

At the hospital, Komal’s condition was reported to be stable and a surgery had to be performed on her finger. Ms. Bhasin said the attacker who shot the bullet appeared to be in his teens and that she could not see the face of the man driving the motorcycle as he was wearing a helmet.

A case has been booked under Sections 307, 356, 379 and 511 of the Indian Penal Code.
