With the Commonwealth Games 2010 now less than a year away, the Delhi Government has sought additional funds from the Centre for expediting the works related to the projects linked to the international sporting evening.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit told the media on Monday that since the cost of several projects had increased, additional funds have been sought. She, however, did not disclose the amount of additional funds sought from the Centre for completion the Games-related works.
Ms. Dikshit said she was confident that whatever extra money would be needed for the projects would be provided. Incidentally, last week the Union Cabinet had reportedly approved additional funds for the Commonwealth Games-related projects. The funds were meant primarily for the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium where the athletics events would take place besides the opening and closing ceremonies.
The other venue that was to benefit from the additional funds was a stadium in Jamia Milia Islamia where the Rugby 7’s event is scheduled to be held.
As for Delhi, it is being said that the need to seek Centre’s assistance arose as the Capital’s own revenue collection fell by Rs.400 crore in the first four months of the current financial year 2009-10.
