In view of the increase in passenger load, the Delhi Metro will add two more coaches per train, which currently has four.
“We will increase the number of coaches to six probably by the middle of next year as the number of commuters using the mass transport system has gone up drastically over the years,” Metro spokesperson Anuj Dayal said.
While the daily passenger traffic was over five lakh in 2007, it has increased to over 8.5 lakhs per day in 2009. “We expect the passenger load to increase to 25 lakh per day by 2011,” he said.
When asked whether there is any move to increase the fare, the spokesperson said, “A committee has been appointed by the government to look into the matter. But we have not yet received the report and as such we have no information of the same.”
New hi-tech coaches are being introduced in all the three lines, however, there is a delay in getting such coaches, he said.
The DMRC has started repaying the loan taken from the Japan Bank for International Co-operation (JBIC) for construction of the first phase, which cost around Rs 10,571 crore, Mr. Dayal added.
