: As municipal and sanitation workers went on strike demanding regular salaries and payment of arrears, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday brought in the “Swachh Bharat” element and directed the police to ensure that there was no hindrance to garbage removal in the Capital by the three municipal corporations.
A Division Bench of the court issued notices to the Union Ministry of Urban Development, Delhi government and the three corporations of Delhi, seeking their stand on a public interest writ petition claiming that the authorities concerned were not paying salaries and arrears for several years to the municipal workers.
The Bench, headed by Chief Justice G. Rohini, asked the Commissioner of Police to ensure that the garbage is removed from the roads in coordination with the civic bodies and the functioning of the latter is not obstructed in any manner.
Another Division Bench, comprising Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, hearing an ongoing matter that the Centre’s Swachh Bharat Campaign should be accepted and complied with by all, said: “Even though a Swachhh Bharat cess has been imposed, Delhi is becoming a garbage dump.”
