With some of its key departments facing staff crunch, the Delhi government has started screening employees attached with various departments and autonomous bodies.
Besides rationalising deployment of its work force, sources said, the Chief Minister has directed the Finance Secretary to conduct the exercise with an aim to identify departments which are over-staffed and are proving to be ‘white elephants’ for the government exchequer.
“There is shortage of staff in almost all major departments. But there are several bodies, especially boards and commissions which have more staff than required. The exercise would help in rationalising the staff across departments,” said a senior Delhi government official.
Besides pruning the work force of departments, the State Government has also decided to wind up departments that have failed to perform as per their objective. As per direction from the Chief Minister, all departments have started giving presentations before the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had also made the decision of winding up of some of its non-performing bodies at a public event last week.
