Delhi gets warmer, rain likely on Tuesday

February 03, 2014 12:48 pm | Updated May 18, 2016 05:34 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The beginning of February turned out to be slightly less nippy than usual with Sunday morning temperatures reaching a high of 24.4 degrees Celsius, three degrees above normal for this time of the year. However, early morning and evening minimum temperatures dipped to a low of 6.8 degrees Celsius, two degrees below normal.

It was a sunny day almost like March with people on the road wearing colourful scarves and thin sweaters, but many carried warm coats too. “The weather could turn any moment and that is why I carry a coat with me at all times,” said Manish, a student who was out to enjoy a sunny day.

The weather has been unpredictable for the past few days; a foggy and cold day would be followed by a bright sun the next day. “Last week, the afternoons have almost been hot. Therefore, on Friday, I decided to leave my heavy coat behind and wore a thin sweater. However, it suddenly got cold by about 4 p.m. It was foggy and I had to cancel my shopping plan and rushed home because I was freezing,” said Radhika, a shopper in Connaught Place.

The weatherman, however, said that Sunday’s weather would continue for the rest of the week. “On most days, there will be fog only in the mornings and late evenings and the sun is expected to remain bright throughout. The temperatures will also be somewhat similar. Monday is likely to have a maximum of 24 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 9 degrees Celsius; Tuesday is also likely to remain at a maximum of 23 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 11 degrees Celsius. The rest of the week will also fluctuate between a maximum of 23 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 11 degrees Celsius,” said the IMD duty officer.

On an average, the city usually fluctuates between a maximum temperature of 24 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 9 degrees Celsius during the month of February. The city also receives rainfall to the tune of an average 18 mm during this month. This year, too, the Capital seems all set for some rain with the IMD forecasting some rain this Tuesday.
