To avenge the death of his sister, a young Delhi Police constable allegedly gunned down his brother-in-law and his elderly mother with his service firearm before shooting himself dead at Bakhtawarpur village in Outer Delhi on Wednesday. The firearm has been seized.
The incident came to light at 9-40 p.m. when Vijay, a 24-year-old police constable who was presently posted with the Security wing, called up the Police Control Room claiming that he had killed two persons in the Bakhtawarpur village of Alipur. While a PCR team rushed to the scene of crime, the area police were also alerted.
The police found Manoj (36) and his mother Prakashwati (62) lying in a pool of blood inside their house. The two were rushed to a nearby hospital where both the victims were declared dead on arrival. Enquiries by the police revealed that Constable Vijay, whose sister was married to Manoj in 2003, had gone to his house looking for him. When the policeman enquired about Manoj, an altercation broke out between him and Manoj’s mother. It is alleged that the constable then whipped out his service revolver and pumped bullets into the mother-son duo. It is suspected that Vijay fired over half-a-dozen bullets before he left the place and informed the police.
While efforts were under way to track down Vijay, the police received another call around midnight, this time about the body of a young man lying on the road close to the Alipur police station. The deceased was finally identified as Vijay. The police suspect that after having murdered his brother-in-law and his mother, he turned the gun on himself. “The same weapon was used in the murders,” said a police officer.
Investigations revealed that Vijay belonged to Sonepat in Haryana. “Nearly a year after his sister was married to Manoj, she killed herself. Subsequently a case was registered against Manoj under Sections 498 and 304 (B) of the Indian Penal Code. While Manoj was acquitted of the dowry death charges, he was convicted for subjecting his wife to cruelty,” said the officer. The police suspect that Vijay was not happy with the decision and want-ed a stricter punishment for his sister’s husband. Hence, he allegedly took the extreme step of eliminating Manoj.
Manoj, who earlier worked as a school teacher, was presently under suspension.
