A 20-year-old Delhi University student was allegedly eve-teased and threatened by a motorcyclist in west Delhi on Sunday following which she captured him on her phone and approached the police.

The accused, Saravjeet Singh, 26, was arrested within 24 hours of the incident after a Facebook post by the girl went viral. The post was shared around 63,000 times at the time of filing this report.

More than the eve-teasing incident, the girl said it was the response of the other motorists that shocked her. “Around two dozen motorists heard the vulgar abuses , but no one intervened,” said Jasleen Kaur, a third year student at St. Stephen’s College.

Ms. Kaur, however, chose not to have her identity concealed. “If my face is covered, it would be his (Saravjeet) victory,” she told The Hindu . The police have announced a reward of Rs 5,000 for her in keeping with their tradition of honouring “brave” girls.

The incident took place at a busy traffic intersection in Tilak Nagar around 8 p.m. on Sunday while Ms. Kaur was crossing the road. Riding a silver Royal Enfield, Saravjeet was in a hurry to cross the road and almost rammed her, the complainant alleged.

She told him to mind the traffic signal and that started off a war of words between the two. “He got off his motorcycle and began passing vulgar comments at me. He even told me to accompany him on his motorcycle,” she alleged.

Ms. Kaur threatened him with a police complaint and began capturing him on her mobile phone to which Saravjeet posed for photos and then threatened her with dire consequences. The motorcyclist then rode away even as she made a police call.

A PCR vehicle arrived at the spot and a case of sexual harassment was registered at the Tilak Nagar police station.
