A 36-year-old businessman allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself in the head at his flat in North-East Delhi on Wednesday morning. The police have recovered a suicide note which mentioned that he took the extreme step because he had to repay a loan of Rs.50,000.

According to the police, it was around 9 a.m. that the victim Surinder Verma’s mother realised that her son had spent almost an hour in the washroom. After she repeatedly knocked at the door, she panicked when she got no response from him. Some of the family members broke open the door only to find Mr. Verma lying in a pool of blood with a suspected bullet injury in his head.

“Mr. Verma’s wife and mother began crying for help and many neighbours rushed to their flat. He was later taken to the nearby hospital where he was declared dead upon arrival,” said a police officer. The officer added that the family members claimed they did not hear the shot being fired.

The police was informed by the hospital authorities and the body was sent for a post-mortem.

Though the police has recovered the victim’s suicide note, the weapon with which he killed himself is missing. According to an investigating officer, the victim in his suicide note had written all the details of his debt and the reason behind the drastic step. “He had written that he owed a total of Rs 50,000 to various people though he hasn’t blamed anyone for his death,” the officer said.

The victim dealt in artificial jewellery and had incurred heavy losses in his business. He also owed money to his landlord and some other acquaintances and was finding it hard to pay back.

“We cross checked with the names of debtors mentioned in the letter and they told us that Mr. Verma did owe them money. They also said that they used to remind him often to pay back, but never exerted pressure to the extent that he would take his life,” said a police officer.

The police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the missing weapon.
