Swati Maliwal, chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), on Saturday, met President Ram Nath Kovind over the Narela incident and demanded action to improve the safety of women in the Capital.

“I have informed the President about how, at this point in time, the entire Capital is engulfed in a racket of drugs and illicit liquor... Additionally, I told him how one of our volunteers was dragged to the streets and attacked just because she objected to bootlegging,” said Ms. Maliwal.

Issue of deterrence

Highlighting safety concerns of minors, Ms. Maliwal said, “Every day children are getting raped in the Capital. I have told the President to constitute a high-level committee comprising Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the Commissioner of Police and the DCW, to tackle perpetrators who do not seem to be scared of anything at this point.”

“We have also requested him for a law, where those who rape minors are sentenced to death within six months. It is only then that we can create deterrence,” added Ms. Maliwal.

The DCW chief said that the President had assured the commission that he will involve all the authorities and deal with the matter.
