Day later, accused evades police net

August 23, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 08:39 am IST - New Delhi:

AISA activist Anmol Ratan continued to evade arrest on Monday, a day after a 28-year-old research scholar accused him of raping her.

A police team visited the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus on Monday to inspect the crime scene and look for the accused, but failed to trace him.

After speaking to other students in the hostel where the accused had a room, the police dispatched teams to possible hideouts in and around Delhi, but to no result. Investigators have also approached Ratan’s family.

A police team had visited the university campus on Sunday after an FIR was registered based on the victim’s statement. “On Sunday, we only preserved the crime scene for inspection the next day,” said a senior police officer.

The rape survivor, meanwhile, was unable to record her statement before the judicial magistrate on Monday due to poor health. “The investigating officer approached the victim today (Monday) morning, but she was unwell. She said she would be able to come tomorrow (Tuesday),” said the officer.

In this case, the FIR was reported to the Vasant Kunj (North) police station on Sunday.
