A 37-year-old man was arrested for allegedly peddling hashish worth ₹40 lakh, the Crime Branch said here on Monday.

Anil Kumar is a resident of Nand Nagri in north-east Delhi but belongs to Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh.

Four kg and 185 gram of the contraband was seized from him, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) G. Ram Gopal Naik.

“A team was constituted to check recent incidents of drug peddling in east, north east and Shahdara districts. The team was working on information about a well-organised syndicate of drug peddlers active in the National Capital Region who brought drugs from Nepal,” he said.

Tip-off

The police received a tip-off regarding Mr. Kumar and the drug consignment. The police were also informed that he would be travelling in a hatchback en route to Nand Nagri from Dilshad Garden.

A trap was laid and Mr. Kumar apprehended from the main road near a bus stand in Nand Nagri.

“We recovered 4.185 kg of drugs from him. Of this, 525 g was recovered from the right pocket of his tracksuit and 3.681 kg from the cavity in the rear bumper of the car,” the police claimed.

Following sustained interrogation, Mr. Kumar allegedly disclosed that he had purchased the contraband from one Gopal Bahadur in Nepal.

Mr. Bahadur met him in Nepal and gave him the drugs on November 16 for supply to one Rajesh in Haryana’s Manesar.

‘Several deliveries’

According to the police, the accused claimed to have supplied similar drug consignments to Mr. Rajesh “several times” and had delivered the last consignment to him just 20 days ago.

“The accused would bring five kg of fine quality hash on each occasion, which he would supply to Mr. Rajesh,” Dr. Naik added.
