Three men were arrested by the Faridabad police on Sunday in connection with an attack on an auto-rickshaw driver and a minor over suspicion that they were transporting beef. The trio was, however, granted bail within hours of their arrest.
The police said brothers Lakhan and Dileep, and Ram Kumar were arrested after they were identified on the basis of a video clip of the incident. “Based on their interrogation, more people will be arrested,” said the Faridabad police spokesperson.
Polio-stricken Azad and the 14-year-old were on their way from Fatehpur to Old Faridabad carrying buffalo meat on Friday when they were waylaid and beaten by a mob of 60-odd people in Kureshipur village. Azad, 27, claimed the beating lasted for almost five hours and continued even in the presence of policemen.
‘Will meet police chief’
The victims and their kin were, however, unhappy that the accused got bail. “They managed to secure bail within hours of the arrest. We are unhappy with the probe. The police invoked lenient sections against the accused, which facilitated their bail. We are planning to meet the Police Commissioner on Monday,” said social activist Hazi Irfan, who has demanded that a SIT be constituted to probe the matter.
DCP, NIT, Faridabad, Astha Modi said more sections of the IPC could be added to the FIR based on the medical report of the victims and the statements of witnesses. Shabbir Kureshi, the minor’s uncle, claimed they have received threats from the absconding accused.
The matter has been reported to the police
