Fire tragedy: A Rohingya refugee camp in south-east Delhi’s Kalindi Kunj was reduced to ashes on April 15.

The Delhi Police is investigating a complaint received against a man who allegedly claimed on social networking platform Twitter that he had burned the Rohingya refugee camps in Kalindi Kunj earlier this month.

Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan had filed a complaint with the New Delhi district police against Manish Chandela, who claimed to be a member of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) on his Twitter account, where he describes himself as a ‘Hindu Nationalist Gurjar Leader’.

Mr. Bhushan submitted screenshots of Mr. Chandela’s tweet on April 15 where he said: “Yes, we did it and we do again #ROHINGYA QUIT INDIA [sic]”.

In a tweet about the fire he replied: “Well done by our heroes”. When asked about it, he tweeted: “Yes we burnt the houses of Rohingya terrorists.”

Mr. Chandela’s account has since been deleted.

Deependra Pathak, chief spokesperson of the Delhi Police, said they had received a complaint in the matter and the Cyber Crime Cell has been roped in to identify the handler of the Twitter account. “The case has been directed to the concerned district (South East) for investigation,” he said.

A police official, however, said that an initial probe has not found any foul play in the fire incident.

Cause of fire

The initial findings point towards a short circuit near some bathrooms located on the extreme right corner of the camp, which sparked the fire. A forensic team of the Delhi Police and officials of a power distribution firm visited the spot to ascertain the cause of fire.

On Sunday, around 226 people living in a Rohingya refugee camp in south-east Delhi’s Kalindi Kunj had to be shifted to a temporary camp after a massive fire broke out in the area. No one was hurt in the incident.
