Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Rishi Pal said the incident happened near the gate outside the police station.

Sound of gunshot

“Kumar and three other policemen were talking in the parking area when the staff heard a gunshot,” Mr. Pal said.

He added that the staff rushed to the spot and found the victim’s body lying in a pool of blood.

Constable Satyavan rushed Kumar to Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital, where he was declared broughtdead.

First Information Report

“When the body was inspected, there was a gunshot injury on the left side of the neck and an exit wound near the left shoulder,” read the First Information Report.

“Considering the overall circumstances”, Mr. Pal said a case of murder under Section 302 was registered.

Meanwhile, Kumar’s family claimed the head constable was murdered by one of the policemen he was arguing with.

“We came to the police station and saw bloodstains spread over a 10-metre radius — as if he had run for his life. He had injuries on the left hand and his nails were blue when we saw the body,” said Kumar’s son Nitin.

The family said the victim left for work around 6.30 p.m. for an 8 p.m. shift. Mr. Nitin added that everything was fine when they spoke to him around 7.30 p.m.

“We received a call at around 11 p.m. that he was injured. We were told to come to the hospital. When we reached the hospital, we were told he was dead,” added the son.

Due for promotion

According to the family, the victim was due for promotion from head constable to assistant sub-inspector around Diwali as he had been in service for the past 28 years.

Kumar is survived by his wife Rajesh Kumari and sons Ashish, 17, and Nitin, 20.
