A senior photojournalist working with a leading national daily was assaulted by a Delhi Police constable while clicking photographs of an elephant running amok near Raj Ghat in Central Delhi on Friday afternoon. The constable has been placed under suspension.
The incident comes days after three policemen were suspended following public outcry for beating up a man near Red Fort. The latest incident was telecast on a news channel, whose cameraperson happened to be at the spot with victim Manas Ranjan Bhui.
Talking to The Hindu , Mr. Bhui said he was clicking photographs of an elephant which had gone berserk around 12.20 p.m. when a constable — later identified as Sandeep Tewatia — confronted and asked him to leave the spot. Mr. Bhui identified himself as a photojournalist and stated that he was just doing his job.
Later in the day, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Delhi) Alok Kumar apologised to Mr. Bhui for the incident.
