While it is still uncertain whether Assembly elections in the city would happen anytime soon, the Congress on Wednesday literally launched its poll campaign with senior party leaders making poll promises and requesting the audience to ensure victory of the local legislator with a bigger margin.
The occasion was the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. While the party launched its Janjagran Campaign, (aimed at ‘exposing’ the BJP and the AAP) from Badli Assembly constituency. Local MLA Devendra Yadav also distributed around two dozen tablets, a scooty and a motorbike out of his area development fund to meritorious students of government schools in his constituency.
Speaking on the occasion, Delhi Congress president Arvinder Singh said: “Both the BJP and the AAP have been exposed. They made tall promises ahead of the election. While the BJP’s acche din slogan is for all to see, the AAP failed to keep up its promises like regularising around 1 lakh contractual employees. Forget about regularisation, several of them have lost their job. We would regularise all contractual employees if we come back to power.”
The function was also attended by AICC general secretary and Delhi in-charge Shakeel Ahmed, sitting MLAs, former Delhi Ministers, and legislators, councillors and office bearers. The venue, in Jahangirpuri in North Delhi, was lined with collages containing alleged “false promises” of Mr. Modi and Mr. Kejriwal
Raising the political pitch, Mr. Ahmed advised the Congress workers and the audience that “they need to perceive both the BJP and the AAP of being two sides of the same coin who came together to divide the Congress votes”.
“ Kejriwal chhote Modi hain aur Modi bade Kejriwal hain [Kejriwal is junior Modi and Modi is bigger Kejriwal]. While one fooled the people of Delhi, the other has fooled the entire country. They are not different. Has corruption been weeded out from Delhi? Why has there not been any anti-corruption movement launched now. They had only one agenda to divide Congress vote. Please ensure victory of the Congress whenever the elections happen in next five or six months,” said Mr. Ahmed.
