The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Monday constituted a joint inspection committee to monitor the levels of water in the Yamuna and asked authorities to assess the amount of water supplied to populated areas.
A Bench headed by judicial member Jawad Rahim constituted a joint inspection committee comprising of members from the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), and officials from the Delhi and Haryana government and asked the committee to submit a report by the first week of April.
The green panel further asked the DJB and the Yamuna Upper Canal Board to check the flow of water into the Yamuna and the amount that was being extracted at Okhla.
The directions came after photographs of bikes crossing the river, suggesting low water levels, were submitted before the Bench.
Pollution in river
The DJB had earlier contended that the amount of water that Haryana was releasing had reduced.
It also alleged that there was presence of high levels of ammonia in the water that the State was supplying to Delhi, making it unfit for drinking purposes.
“Why are you picking up things here and there? We are only concerned with the pollution in Yamuna. You are coming up with a new plea each time. We are interested in the entire stretch of Yamuna and not confined to segments,” the Bench had stated.
