CM infringing on our rights, say municipal leaders

March 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The squabble between the BJP-led municipal corporations and the AAP-ruled Delhi Government continued on Thursday, with civic body leaders accusing Chief Minister Kejriwal of infringing on the Corporations’ rights.

The Leaders of the House in the three Corporations hit out against Mr. Kejriwal’s comments on the financial instability of the civic bodies. East Delhi Municipal Corporation Leader of the House Ram Narayan Dubey said: “The Delhi Government is responsible for the financial crisis by not cooperating with the civic bodies.”

He added that if the various government departments that owe hundreds of crores in property tax paid up, the situation would improve. The EDMC is the worst hit by the financial crunch, being unable to pay staff for months.

The Mayors of the Corporations had met the Chief Minister on March 21 to ask for financial aid, but were turned down and asked to approach the Centre for help.

North Delhi Municipal Corporation Leader of the House Mira Aggarwal said the government was trying to bring the civic bodies under its control by discontinuing legitimate funds and grants.
