The Delhi Police have given their own department a clean chit over the forged character certificate obtained by rape accused Uber cab driver Shiv Kumar Yadav.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Madhur Verma said preliminary investigations have not pointed towards any insider assisting him in preparing the document, which contains the signature of former Delhi Police officer L.T. Hrangchal. Mr. Hrangchal has already denied signing the document, which was submitted to the transport office in Burari.
Yadav, who has been booked in a separate case for forging the document, purportedly told the police that a tout he met outside the Burari office helped him to obtain the forged document. Yadav had submitted the document to Uber International that hired him.
Moving on with the probe in the case, the police have recovered the iPhone which was provided by Uber to Yadav. He had hidden the mobile, considered a crucial evidence in the case, at his Mathura house. With this, the police have now seized two of the three phones used by Yadav.
Uber provides its cab drivers an iPhone with the Uber App. pre installed in it. The phone is used to confirm bookings and sends details of the drivers to passengers.
“The phone will help us establish the culpability of the cab service and its GPS signature will help us corroborate the route from where the girl was picked and subsequently raped,” said Mr. Verma.
Yadav will be produced before a court on Thursday, when his three-day police custody comes to an end. The police have hinted they might not seek extension of his remand.
