With the rainy season around the corner, Delhi’s municipal corporations have almost finished de-silting drains to make sure they don’t get water-logged during the monsoon.

In accordance with a National Green Tribunal (NGT) order, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation had completed 96 per cent of its de-silting work as of May 31. From October 1, 2014, till June 7, 2015, the North Corporation had removed 8654.41 metric tonnes of silt from the 182 drains in its area. A total of 1,324.87 metric tonnes were lifted from the 14 natural drains in North Delhi.

The East Delhi Municipal Corporation had completed 81 per cent of the de-silting work as of May 31, removing 38,560.51 metric tonnes of silt from October 2014 onwards.

In addition, as per NGT orders, the civic bodies have been issuing challans for throwing garbage into drains. The EDMC has issued 118 challans and the North Corporation handed out 81 challans in the past week.
