The Capital has been witnessing a consecutive rise in cases of motor vehicle thefts.
As per the data provided by the Delhi Police, in 2014, on an average, 64 vehicles were reported stolen every day. The figure has risen to 117 vehicles per day in 2018, witnessing a jump of around 82%.
Police leak information
The Delhi Police attributed the sharp rise in registration of cases of vehicle thefts to online registration of FIRs.
They also claimed that cases of four-wheeler thefts were much lower as compared to two-wheelers. However, recovery of stolen vehicles is merely 10%.
“On an average, two police teams of crime branch visit Meerut every week after nabbing carjackers but most of the time return empty-handed as the local [Meerut] police leak information about their arrival,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Bhisham Singh.
“Whenever we conducted raids in the past after receiving tip-offs about vehicles stolen from Delhi, the local police in Meerut made certain excuses and failed to provide backup force fearing a law and order crisis in the area. And the carjackers would escape each time forcing us to return empty-handed,” Mr. Singh said.
Officers in the loop
However, he added, both the situation and cooperation have improved since the Delhi Police started keeping senior Meerut police officers in the loop about the raids.
Recently, a raid was conducted and two owners of godown indulge in dismantling of stolen vehicles were nabbed from Meerut.
