A 30-year-old cab driver was shot at by three men at a ‘chungi’ near Dhankot village here on Sunday. One of the accused has been arrested. Jhajjar resident Gajendra Kumar and his cousin were on their way home in their Tata Indigo cab when they had a minor altercation with three men travelling in a Swift Dzire at a ‘chungi’ on Farrukh Nagar road around 10:30 p.m.

“The two groups had an altercation over overtaking near the ‘chungi’. When Gajender Kumar stopped his cab at the ‘chungi’ to pay the toll, one of the three got down from his car and shot him point blank. Gajendra was hit in the neck. The three then escaped,” said Sangeeta Rani, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West). The accused were in an inebriated state at the time of the incident, the police said.

Gajendra’s cousin then took him to Civil Hospital in the cab. He was later admitted to Medanta Hospital and is said to be critical. The police are yet to record the statement of Gajendra.

The police identified all the three accused during the day and recovered the car in which the trio were travelling. The prime accused, Jhonny alias Dagar, a resident of Gandhi Nagar, was later arrested.

In a similar incident, Umesh Kumar Pandey, a toll attendant, was shot dead by a local at the Kherki Dhaula toll plaza in 2011 when the former sought Rs.27 as toll. Umesh was hit in the neck and had died on the spot.
