Hearing a plea filed by a Faridabad resident against housing societies discharging untreated waste water in an unscientific manner, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Monday attached the bank accounts of the respective builders to an extent of ₹25 lakh.
A Bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar further levied a fine of ₹5 lakh on each of the builders.
Further, on observing that Era Redwood Residency did not have sewage treatment plants within the society, the green panel imposed a fine of ₹25 lakh and also directed that electricity and water facilities be severed.
Direction to HUDA
The Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) has been asked to ensure that proper sewage lines are installed in the area.
The Bench also said that an inspection of the same will be carried out within a month by a joint inspection team. The plea was filed by social worker Varun Sheokhand who alleged that many of the residential societies were discharging their sanitary waste water in the green belt of Greater Faridabad, contaminating the land and water.
Treatment plants
Asking the National Green Tribunal to pass appropriate directions against those who were polluting the environment, the petition read: “The sanitary waste water or black water is affecting the natural vegetation of the area as hundreds of trees and plants are dying due to this contaminated water. This black water leads to land degradation, air, water and land pollution.”
Earlier, the green panel had directed the builders to ensure that sewage treatment plants are installed in all the societies.
