Hair-raising case: More than two dozen incidents of braids chopping have been reported from Gurugram, Nuh and Palwal.

Amid growing incidents of braids being cut off in parts of south Haryana, the Gurugram police on Tuesday appealed to the masses for help to identify the miscreants and their motive behind the rumours.

Posh colonies

The Gurugram police said in a press statement that all incidents were reported only from rural areas with a large population being illiterate or less educated, and not a single incident was reported from posh colonies or by working women.

Ulterior motives

The police said the fact that such incidents were not reported from women’s colleges and schools hinted at possible involvement of miscreants and ulterior motives.

The statement added that there were few incidents but rumours were making it difficult for the police to carry out a thorough investigation.

The police appealed to the masses for help to identify the suspects so that they can be brought to book. More than two dozen incidents of braids chopping have been reported from Gurugram and its neighbouring areas such as Nuh and Palwal. Four incidents have been reported from Delhi as well.

A First Information Report was registered at Ferozepur Jhirka Police Station in Nuh in this connection on July 30 and two daily dairy entries were made at Sector 5 police station in Gurugram.

Keeping vigil

Nuh Deputy Commissioner Mani Ram Sharma said he had a meeting with village sarpanches in this connection and directed them to keep vigil through teams of local residents.

Haryana Director General of Police B.S. Sandhu said there was no breakthrough in the cases so far and it was difficult to explain how braids of women were cut off inside their homes.

Mr. Sandhu said he had directed registration of cases so that the matter can be investigated and the mystery unravelled.
