Two youths died after their car plunged into the Yamuna in Timarpur in the early hours of Thursday. The incident happened after their friend, who was driving the car, failed to see the road ahead of him due to dense fog. The police have said they are probing the case from all angles.

Five inside car

The victims have been identified as Deepak Jangir (23) and Krishan Yadav (22), residents of south Delhi’s Hauz Khas.Mothers of both victims are Delhi Police officers posted in south district.

According to the police, the victims, on Wednesday, had gone to meet their friends — Deepak Kadyan, Anand, and Aakash — at a rented accommodation in Wazirabad. Around 12:30 a.m., they decided to visit Shyam Ghat. “All of them spent some time there and decided to leave around 1:30 a.m. Their friend Kadyan, who was driving, didn’t see the Yamuna ahead of him because of the fog,” said a senior police officer.

The officer said the car hit the water with five people inside but three of the friends managed to make it out of the car.

“Deepak Kadyan was driving while Deepak Jangir was sitting on the passenger seat. Krishna was sitting on the left side of the back seat along with Anand in the middle and Aakash on the right side. As the car turned on its left inside water, Deepak Jangir and Krishan couldn’t get out while the other three managed to escape,” he said.

‘No phones’

The police said none of the five knew how to swim, further dampening their chances. However, the three friends who survived took nearly an hour and a half to get help allegedly because their phones fell into the Yamuna.

The officer said the three reached the ghat and walked a few metres to find people in order to ask for help and call the police. “The three said that they walked a few metres and found a police picket. By the time the call was made to us, it was 3:40 a.m. The police reached the spot with other teams and took the boys out along with the car,” said the officer, adding that they were taken to a nearby hospital where they were declared brought dead.

The police said that the victims and their friends were preparing for civil services examination. Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Jatin Narwal said that the police have registered a case under Section 279 (rash driving) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code. “The case has been registered at Timarpur police station based on Anand’s complaint and we are investigating the case from all angles,” he said.
