BJP leader courts controversy

July 24, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 07:53 am IST - GURGAON:

Amid outrage over the gangrape of a Dalit student in Rohtak by the same men again after three years, a BJP woman leader has courted controversy by saying that rapes have been happening since the world was created.

Nirmal Bairagi, who heads the BJP's State Women's Cell, at a function in Ambala on Friday said: “Rapes have been happening since the world was created. Rapes have happened in every era.” She, however, hastened to add that the State government was sensitive towards it and the culprits could not escape the law.

Later, she did a turnaround and told reporters in Panchkula that she was actually referring to cases of rape committed during the tenure of previous governments.

Reacting to the statement of Ms. Bairagi, Indian National Lok Dal leader Digvijay Singh said that many things had been happening since the world was created and wondered if those would continue to happen during the BJP rule. He said that the BJP's leader statement was an insult to women and she should be immediately removed from her post.

Haryana govt flayed

Having failed to act promptly in the wake of the gangrape of the 20-year-old in Rohtak, the Haryana government has been accused of deteriorating law and order situation in the State. In a recent statement, Haryana Congress leader and former excise and taxation minister Kiran Choudhary had blamed the government for failing to control crime against women.

Even ten days after the gang-rape, two of the culprits are still at large. The sensational crime has led to a series of protests in Rohtak and Bhiwani demanding the immediate arrest of the accused. The victim's family has also demanded that the case be heard in a fast-track court for a speedy trial.
