The BJP Municipal Councillor from Ward No 10 Timarpur, Surender Singh Chaudhary on Wednesday resigned from the party and joined the Congress in the presence of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president J. P. Agarwal at Rajiv Bhawan here.

Welcoming Mr. Chaudhary into the party fold, Mr. Agarwal said the BJP was a sinking ship, whose cadres were leaving the party in droves. He said under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi, the Congress was serving the people of Delhi admirably.

Mr. Agarwal said those who are joining the Congress after leaving the BJP would be given due importance and their experience in politics would be utilised to the optimum.

Mr. Chaudhary said he was quitting the BJP as it sought to divide the people on communal and caste lines whereas the Congress believed in democratic functioning and social equality. Claiming that he was influenced by the policies and programmes of Congress president and the persona and work of general secretary Rahul Gandhi, the Councillor said he wanted to serve the party in Delhi.
