In one of the biggest heroin hauls in the national capital, 52 kg of high-grade contraband was seized from an Afghan national by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence today.

Official sources said the DRI sleuths, based on specific inputs, intercepted a sedan car being driven by a 34-year-old Afghan national on the Singu border with Haryana.

After the vehicle was checked, 52 kg of Afghanistan heroin with street value of Rs 52 crore was found.

The Kandahar resident, who had come to India in September this year, has been arrested and booked under the stringent NDPS Act.

Sources said today’s seizure is the biggest in the national capital in the last 15 years.

Sources said the drugs, which seem to have been brought into the country through the Indo-Pak border, were meant to be smuggled out of the country.

The national capital has often been used by the drug cartels as a transit point.

Incidentally, since April, DRI has detected 193 cases of outright smuggling and seized narcotics drugs and other contraband like ketamine, ephedrine among others including environmentally sensitive commodities worth Rs 243 crore.

In narcotics drugs, 28 kg of heroin and 11 tonne of ganja with street value of Rs 152 crore were seized across the country.
