Auto-driver sets himself and girlfriend on fire

A 21-year-old auto-rickshaw driver set himself and his teenaged girlfriend on fire in Pitampura here on Thursday. Their condition is said to be critical.

Ravi alias Golu accosted his 16-year-old girl friend outside Pushpanjali Enclave in the afternoon and doused her in petrol which he carried in a bottle.He then doused himself with petrol and set himself ablaze. Even before the girl could react, Ravi grasped her with both his arms and she was also enveloped in flames. Some passers-by poured water on them and took them to Jaipur Golden Hospital. “The two have been diagnosed with 50-60 per cent burns and are critical. Ravi has now been shifted to Safdarjung Hospital and the girl is in LNJP Hospital,” said a senior police officer.

A case under Section 307 (attempt to murder) and 309 (attempt to commit suicide) has been registered at the Mangolpuri police station.

Ravi is married and has two children.The girl works as domestic help. Both are residents of Indira Jhuggi-Jhonpri camp in Rohini Sector -3.
